Two Canada Day Sangria Recipes

These two sangria recipes are perfect for summer. They’re made with fresh fruit, and you can customize the sweetness to hit the perfect level of refreshment. You don’t have to make both, but displaying them side by side fits a red-and-white Canada Day party perfectly.

Red Sangria

We recommend using pinot noir, but any red wine low in tannins will work. We use maple syrup in the recipe, partly because it’s so fitting for Canada Day, but also because the toasted notes in it go wonderfully with red wine.

If you’re making an alcohol-free version, you can sub out the red wine for juice. There are tons of different juices you can use, but we recommend using at least half a cup of unsweetened pomegranate juice because it helps keep the sangria relatively dry.

It helps to make this a few hours ahead of time so all the flavours can mix together, but it will still taste great if you combine right before serving.

Ingredients

  • 1 750mL bottle of pinot noir

  • ½ cup brandy

  • 1 orange

  • 1 apple, sliced thinly

  • ½ cup of fresh berries, sliced

  • 1 lemon, sliced thinly

  • Maple syrup, to taste

  • Ice to serve

Instructions

  1. Cut the orange in half. Squeeze one half for the juice, and cut the other half into thin rounds.

  2. Add the orange and the rest of the sliced fruit to the pitcher. Add brandy and a tablespoon of maple syrup. Stir to combine, being careful to not muddle the fruit too much.

  3. Add the pinot noir. Taste and add maple syrup if needed.

  4. Refrigerate for a couple hours.

  5. Add ice right before serving.

White Wine Sangria

Our white sangria recipe is sparkling and dry, but you can adjust the sweetness by adding extra maple syrup and fruit. We used all red berries for a red and white effect perfect for a Canada Day party.

For an alcohol-free version, sub out the white wine and triple sec for sparkling cider. If the cider is very sweet, you can use half cider and half club soda.

Ingredients

  • 1 750mL bottle dry white wine

  • ½ cup triple sec

  • 1 cup sliced strawberries

  • ½ cup fresh raspberries

  • Juice from ½ lemon

  • 1 355mL can of sparkling water or club soda

  • Maple syrup, to taste

  • Ice to serve

Instructions

  1. In a pitcher, combine the white wine, triple sec and fresh fruit.

  2. Add one tablespoon of maple syrup and the lemon juice. Taste it, and add more maple syrup if needed.

  3. Refrigerate for 2-4 hours.

  4. Remove from refrigerator, add ice and top with sparkling water.
